> ΕDUCATION / FOREIGN LANGUAGES
… at a glance
In today’s modern multicultural environment, learning more than one foreign language is a vital necessity. For this reason, learning English at our School, with the existing enhanced programme, starts early on in the pre-Kindergarten years while the second foreign language (French or German) is added in Grade 3 of Primary School. The educational programme we use is based on our own Institutional Learning Goals Syllabus and is certified by internationally recognised bodies.
Aims and Objectives
The purpose of the Foreign Language Department is the teaching of English, French and German throughout the School: Kindergarten, Primary, Jr. and Sr. High Schools (Lyceum), according to the needs of students. The aim is to offer quality language services through quality certification procedures involving Eaquals (EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT FOR QUALITY LANGUAGE SERVICES). By participating in EALTA (EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR LANGUAGE TESTING AND ASSESSMENT), we ensure the objectivity of the evaluation as regards the performance of students and also of the work that we do as educators. We collaborate with the following exam bodies: Cambridge ESOL, the University of Michigan for English, the Institute Français for French and the Athens Goethe-Institut for German.
Foreign languages are viewed as an integral part of every human activity and as a carrier of messages and emotions. The main objective is to acquire knowledge by learning autonomously, on an individual level and with teachers who work as role models.
In the teaching of a foreign language, there is a common starting point for everyone but a different end point for each student. This is because the intellectual and physical maturation rates of every individual child vary. In view of this, our educational efforts need to follow the normal growth and development curves of the students in order to achieve the expected results. Thus, by separating the students into Skill Levels in Foreign Languages, we empower and strengthen the efforts of every child to achieve their objectives and feel satisfied with their progress and successes.
Native Speakers – Bilingual Students – English
Native Speaker streams exist in English in the Primary School. Children who are eligible for these streams usually have English as their native language and use it extensively at home. Other suitable candidates are those who grew up in an English-speaking country and attended kindergarten or primary school in that country. Finally, those who attended an English-speaking Kindergarten in Greece and whose linguistic ability is supported by the continued use of English at home can also join the group. In these classes, we use native language material graded at the children’s language ability.
Enriched English Accross the Board
English is taught daily through an intensive and enhanced programme.
Kindergarten: There are parallel teaching modules between the Greek classes and English to achieve a smooth connection between the two languages.
Primary School: In addition to the daily teaching of English as a Foreign Language, the following subjects are also taught in English: Music, Musical Education, Digital Skills, Literature and Visual Arts.
Jr. High School: In addition to teaching English as a Foreign Language, the following subjects are taught in English: Music, Digital Skills, Technology, STEM and Home Economics.
Content & Language Integrated Learning - CLIL
CLIL or Content and Language Integrated Learning is an educational approach where English is used for teaching content and the development of language competence. We apply CLIL at our school in a variety of subjects depending on the grade and age of the children. The objectives of the programme are to improve course content and communication in English, to develop critical thinking and to shape the personalities of our future Global Citizens. Training and certification of our English teachers is a prerequisite for the completion of the goals of the programme. Students receive certifications for the CLIL programme.
Αs part of the curriculum, οur students are prepared to participate in certification exams by practicing beforehand with internal screening tests and mock tests. We collaborate with the following recognised and accredited bodies: Cambridge ESOL, University of Michigan, Institut Français, Goethe Institut, Österreichisches Sprachdiplom.
